2.6 Running the data reduction.

Once you have loaded the extra-focal images and configuration options you may carry out the data reduction step. The simplest procedure is to press the go button on the lower tool bar window. This steps through a pre-programmed sequence of data reduction steps (here-after referred to as iterations) to generate the wavefront. You may stop the program at any time by pressing the stop button which becomes active when the sequence is running. Note that on slow computers you may have to wait some time for the program to respond to your stop command. Terminating the data reduction sequence using the stop button always leaves the wavefront in a valid state.

During the data reduction images will be you will see images displayed in the two display windows. For each iteration of the algorithm the program alternately displays the two corrected extra-focal images, followed by the corrected curvature signal and residual wavefront. The entry in the title of each display window informs you of the current contents of the window.

In the case of unexpected errors messages may be printed to the window from which ef was started. If you see a message which begins WARNING: negative scale parameter, ef image is within caustic your extra-focal images were probably taken too close to focus. You cannot expect stable wavefront reconstruction from such images.
