Go up to 9 installation

9.1 Unix operating system.

Please complete the following steps to install the program under the UNIX operating system. You can install the program in any location you desire, but you must have write permission for your desired destination directories. For the beta or demo versions we recommend that you run the program directly from the CDROM or from a copy of the CDROM contents Note that the documentation supplied with a beta release may not be up to date.

9.1.1 Running from the CD.

The program is supplied on A single CDROM, and can be run directly from the CD. To run the program from the CD, change directory to the bin directory of the CD and type ef. Note that some disks contain versions of the software for several operating systems. In this case you need to move to the CDROM directory "os"/bin where "os" is the name of the operating system you are using.

9.1.2 Installing.

To install the program follow the steps below:
  1. Mount CD. Mount the CD rom and change directory to its contents.
  2. Install program. Type ./setup to run the installation script.
  3. Selecting a destination. The setup program starts a simple Tk (graphical) installation script, which takes care of the installation details. You will need to enter the desired destination directories for the executable, libraries, and documentation respectively. You will need write permission for each of these locations. When you have selected the destination, simply hit the Do install button.
  4. Try it out. To start the program, exit the installation directory and type ef, if there are no problems you should soon see the ef user interface window. Note that you must have the directory of (ef) in your shell search path.

9.1.3 Installing from the command line.

There is currently no way to automatically install the program from the command line. If you need to do this, please call us for instructions.

9.1.4 Notes on object libraries.

By default most of the libraries that ef uses are installed in the ef/lib directory. If you already have some of these libraries installed on your system (eg libtk.so and libstdc++.so), you may wish to remove (or rename) the ef versions. This will save disk space and computer memory when the program is running. We cannot guarantee correct function of the program when using different versions of these libraries.

Note that you may not freely re-distribute a program containing our code or object modules without express written permission from Laplacian Optics Inc.
