The table below provides accurate coordinates and identifications for stars in NGC 2362, the tau CMa cluster. As is common, there is no complete published chart for the cluster. In 1950 Johnson published a chart and photograph together with pre-UBV photometry. This data and new observations were included in the "original" UBV paper in 1953. Perry made new UBV and uvby-beta observations of CPD stars in the field. Finally, Balona & Laney searched for beta Cepheids and extended the uvby data to fainter magnitudes. Their unlabelled and incomplete chart extended the numbering scheme to 109, though there is a duplicate star in common with Johnson and one star does not exist, perhaps an internal reflection in their optical system. Finally, I added coordinates for two close companions to tau CMa, one of which lacks them in SIMBAD. (I have called these '23a' and '23b' in the table.) Mermilliod shows a chart by Becker at the WEBDA site, but it does not include stars close to the overexposed tau CMa at the cluster center. Better would be a labelled scan of the Baade 100-inch plate in Johnson's 1950 paper. In general SIMBAD shows only approximate coordinates for stars in the cluster. I have followed the Mermilliod numbering scheme as best I could tell. Note the following minor points: o The spectral type for CPD-24 2185 (B8) given by Perry is from the HD, and not from Schild as implied by the text. o Perry lists two stars as Johnson 30. The first of these, CPD-24 2225, is Johnson 27. o Balona & Laney star 83 = Johnson 27. I show both entries with duplicate data and IDs in the table. o Balona & Laney star 97 does not exist. I compared the various charts against screen-plots of UCAC2, and dealt with crowded stars one-by-one as usual. 2MASS was very useful here. I matched the coordinate list in VizieR against the Cordoba, Cape, and Tycho-2 catalogues, and did various other checks on a few stars. The position for the cluster itself in SIMBAD should be made that of tau CMa: 7 18 42 -24 57.3 (J2000). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Coordinates and identifications for stars in NGC 2362 version: 12 Mar 2005 source: 1950ApJ...112..240J JOHNSON H.L.
