Star-catalogue folks, The list below summarizes spectral types for about 325 stars within a radius of 1 degree of Alcyone in the Pleiades. The types were collected by Leendert Binnendijk in his 1946 Leiden (?) dissertation on the cluster ("A study of stars in the Pleiades region based on photographic magnitudes, colour-equivalents, spectral types, and proper motions"). The bulk of the types, especially for fainter stars, are taken from work by Schwassmann (1930, Mitt. Hamburger Sternw., 6, 129) and Gratton (1939, Stockholm Ann., 13, no. 3), and several other sources, all reduced to a uniform system nominally matching the HD scale. I have chosen all stars with photo-blue magnitude 12.54 and brighter, plus all those between 12.55 and 13.00 with at least two determinations of spectral type---the types for fainter stars are clearly unreliable. This comes to somewhat more than a quarter of the original entries. MK types from reliable sources should of course be preferred over the types given here. Binnendijk provided arcsecond-precision coordinates, which were readily matched to the corresponding GSC entry, and those positions adopted below. The stars are designated by the now common "HII" system of Hertzsprung (1947, Leiden Ann., 19, part 1 = 1947AnLei..19a...1H), although a few stars (indicated with parentheses around the number), use the older (1923) Hertzsprung numbers. The positions give unambiguous identification in any case. In SIMBAD, the HII star names are given as: Cl Melotte 22 nnnn (no * after 'Cl'). Binnendijk's photo-blue magnitudes and mean types are added. The remarks show mostly HD and BD names, and occasionally spectral types from more recent literature. Often I give some indication which of the types is more nearly correct based usually on UBV/uvby colors, although deciding which was in error was not always possible because of strong reddening immediately behind the cluster. Thanks to remarks from Bill Buscombe, I have added some types in the comments from his 10th volume of published MK classifications that are more likely to be correct. About 250 of the stars have multiple entries in SIMBAD (as many as six for the same star!), and a rather extensive list of IDs has been sent to Gerard Jasniewicz so that SIMBAD can be cleaned up. (He found a few errors of mine in return.) There are only a few genuine errors in SIMBAD, however, invariably things that have occurred in the literature itself. A large number of 'new' HD/BD identifications are made here. Longer notes are added at the bottom, indicated by an asterisk next to the star number.
