The list below gives accurate coordinates for a batch of white dwarf and red dwarf proper-motion stars appearing in a 1952 paper by Luyten. SIMBAD indexes only 17 of the objects, but the stars that have spectral types are listed with new data (Tables 1 and 2) in the paper. Some of the stars are correct in SIMBAD ('SIMBAD okay' in the remarks) because Gerard and I have worked them over previously, dealing with earlier papers by Popper and by Luyten. All the rest are variously screwed up in the database: bad positions, no positions, multiple IDs, garbled entries, etc. The stars appear in the McCook WD catalogue usually with only approximate coordinates. I usually used the older DSS1 image and the 2MASS J-band scan to both identify the stars by motion and to distinguish red/blue pairs. To the extent possible I have used reliable sources of coordinates that include motions, mainly UCAC2 and USNO-B1.0. These names are included in the table so the motions can be added to the SIMBAD headers. Where I have quoted them, the USNO-B1.0 detections seem to be complete, i.e. five detections in the north and four detections in the south. I omit the B1.0 name if there is a UCAC2 entry so that the lesser-quality (or just plain wrong) B1.0 will not be adopted by mistake. The other positions are mostly for an epoch near to (but not exactly) 2000. The spectral types are those given by Luyten, and thus are not always the best available, though sometimes it is the only one. I searched usually a 5' radius around each corrected position to find new IDs---most stars have them---and show these in the remarks at the end of each line. I add GSC names here, too. Some longer notes are at the bottom of the table, flagged by an asterisk next to the coordinates. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some large-proper-motion stars and red-dwarf/white-dwarf pairs version: 19 Feb 2005 source: 1952ApJ...116..283L LUYTEN W.J.
