The list below shows improved coordinates and identifications for about 750 carbon stars reported by Jack MacConnell in a 2003 paper. He supplied mostly USNO-A2.0 coordinates, which were "okay", but often skewed by 1"-3" due to crowding and sometimes by slight mis-identification. I grabbed the complete list from SIMBAD and matched the file in VizieR against better astrometric sources (mostly UCAC2 and 2MASS), checking at the same time for red colors. For a number of discrepant cases, Jack has kindly re-examined his far-red objective-prism plates and confirms that several of the stars are not carbon or have some clerical slip-up. These seven stars to be deleted are listed at the top of the table. I matched the cleaned list against IRAS (both the main point-source and faint-source 'rejects' catalogues) and MSX6C. A remarkable number of the stars appear only in the 'rejects' list ('Z' prefix on the IRAS name), usually confirmed by an MSX6C detection, once again showing the value of the 'rejects' data when a source position is known accurately. Another match was done against the S-star catalogue and the GCVS. I also found at least approximate V magnitudes using GSC-2.3, USNO-B1.0 (sometimes B+R/2 from both catalogues), and ASAS-3. Magnitudes are given in whole- of half-magnitude increments either if the star is stongly variable, or if the magnitude itself is simply uncertain (mostly for the fainter stars).
