The list below shows accurate (but not always precise) coordinates for about 130 variables and another 100 or so comparison stars in the field of NGC 2210. NGC 2210 is one of the few true globulars in the LMC, and located east of the main body of the galaxy. The field stars and cluster variables been worked over by Walker (1985MNRAS.212..343W), by Hazen & Nemec (1992AJ....104..111H, HN92 henceforth), and finally by Reid & Freedman (1994MNRAS.267..821R, RF94 henceforth). There are additional papers dealing with the cluster color-magnitude diagram that are ignored here. The main problem with the variables is that coordinates for them published by Hazen & Nemec are completely in error, sometimes only a few tens of arcsec but in other instances by a degree or so. At mag. 19 in the LMC, this of course means they're lost. No systematic error was evident to me (incorrect precession amounts or direction, fixed offsets in RA/Dec): they're just wrong. The main HN92 data table had to be republished in an erratum, so perhaps there were other problems, too. Unfortunately these stars are all included in SIMBAD with the erroneous positions, and hence unrecoverable as they stand. Walker and RF94 published only charts for their stars, as (luckily) did HN92. I have used the published charts to determine positions for all the 85 HN92 field variables, 44 cluster variables plus those by RF94, as well as comparison sequences in and around the cluster by HN92. (These comp stars are also in SIMBAD with bogus coordinates.) I started with screen plots of USNO-A2.0 to get at least rough positions, then refined these using GSC-2.2, USNO-B1.0, 2MASS, etc., in VizieR while comparing DSS images from the Goddard SkyView service at large scale. Many stars were so faint and/or crowded that positions were estimated from the DSS images, controlled with positions for nearby stars that do appear in the catalogues. Ultimately, every star listed below was examined on a DSS cutout to compare with the published charts. The tables are laid out as follows. Throughout I have adopted the acronyms shown by SIMBAD and the Lortet 'Dictionary' and given in the citations below. These names are shown in the first column. Results for Tables 2 and 3 of HN92 are given first, which show photoelectric/CCD data (Table 2) and photographic control sequences (Table 3) over the field. All the BV data are present in SIMBAD for these stars, so I show only V magnitudes as a guide. I note here that RF94 found an offset of ~0.08 mag. in these data (HN92 fainter) among the brighter stars compared to Walker's zero-point. Combined results for the field variables from HN92's Tables 9 and 10 follow. To the extent available (from Walker, HN92, and RF94) I show mean V magnitudes and types as determined by these authors. Some external links from SIMBAD/VizieR are given in the remarks. The notes have to do mainly with crowding and identification in close pairs. These remarks should be taken as an indication that the position could be slightly off even if given to full 0".1 precision. All the reported cluster variables (HN92 Table 11 and cluster chart) are next. Again I show mean V and types as available from either HN92 or RF94. Not all of these stars have actually been observed photometrically, so there are no lightcurves published for them; these unobserved stars are specified in the notes. Others are found to be constant by RF94, and might be considered as "suspected variables". Finally I show additional cluster variables from RF94 Table 3. Their chart is sufficiently crowded that I could not identify all the intended stars even if the label was discernable. Only a few of these stars appear in the GCVS v4.1 extragalactic catalogue, but I give the names of those that do. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Variables and other stars in the field of NGC 2210 version: 11 May 2003, some coords improved using SuperCOSMOS 17 Dec 2002, original cluster center: 6 11 31.6 -69 07 18 (J2000, GSC-ACT) position sources (column 's'): b USNO-B1.0 (2003AJ....M (in press), I/284) E SuperCOSMOS-Edinburgh (http://www-wfau.roe.ac.uk/sss/obj.html) g GSC-2.2 (2001GSC2..C......0S, I/271) M 2MASS second release (20002MASS.2.......:, B/2mass/out) s SkyView estimate (+/-2") T Tycho-2 (2000A&A...357..367H, I/259) U UCAC1 (2000AJ....120.2131Z, I/268) source: 1992AJ....104..111H HAZEN M.L. and NEMEC J.M.
