The list below shows accurate coordinates and identifications for about 1400 M giants catalogued by Neckel in a 1958 objective-prism survey. Most of the stars are of relatively early type and are contained in the BD catalogue (usually). The list is thus complementary to similar surveys by Nassau and collaborators, who catalogued late-type M stars in a similar swath of the northern Milky Way. Neckel determined spectral types on far-red plates taken with the Burrell Schmidt + 4-deg prism. Stars in common with the Nassau et al lists were classified independently, since the latter examined plates taken with the 2-deg prism. After a 15-year delay, Neckel published BV photometry for somewhat more than one thousand of the stars. Table 2 of the paper contains several dozen bright red variables, which is omitted here, since all the types are copied from Cameron & Nassau (1956ApJ...124..346C). In SIMBAD the stars range from being fully incorporated to completely absent: many BD names are missing altogether, or are present without coordinates, or are present by other names (IRAS, Tycho, etc), and so forth. Neckel often assigned an incorrect BD name, or gave the BD name to a companion of the actual BD star, which has led to several misidentifications in the literature. Many stray IDs are unlinked in SIMBAD. A number of more complicated mix-ups have been sent separately to Gerard Jasniewicz. The majority of the stars are nevertheless correctly attributed to a BD name, so I used those as a start for searches in SIMBAD and VizieR. If the BD star was not found, then I looked it up in VizieR and resumed the search. I used SkyView image cut-outs of DSS1 and 2MASS J to confirm the IDs along with magnitudes and colors from UCAC2, Tycho-2, and 2MASS. Numerous named variables were sought using the GCVS on-line query service. In the table below, the BD name is shown in the first column if it is one (sometimes a different BD star than given by Neckel). If another name is given, it means the BD star is not what Neckel classified. Two stars remain lost, probably typos in the BD name or some other error; I did search in various ways for each of them without luck. Coordinates come from the usual sources, mostly UCAC2 and Tycho-2, and specified by the letter code following the positions. Neckel gave BD magnitudes adjusted for the nominal scale error. These are unsatisfactory (as he was well aware, since he did photometry on two-thirds of them later), so I show standard V rounded to 0.1-mag precision from Tycho-2, ASAS-3, TASS MkIV, and other sources as appropriate, including Neckel's BV data. Most of the stars are at least slightly variable at the couple-tenths level, so these are merely a guide. The remarks show many IDs (for multiple SIMBAD entries) and some other comments. I give some Tycho-2 and UCAC2 identifiers, but these are not complete. Though Neckel noticed one M dwarf (BD+56 2783 = Kruger 60), two others appear: BD-05 1737, a recently-identified star only 10pc distant, and BD+31 3767 = LHS 3482/83 (another common-motion pair). Are the types any good? Comparison against my comprehensive file suggests that for types M3 and later, the zero-point and scale are systematically close to the MK system, as indicated by stars in common with Keenan, Abt, and MacConnell. The stars called M2 are inconsistent: sometimes they are ordinary K giants and supergiants. As shown in Neckel's Figure 2, the types in the Nassau-Cameron-Blanco papers from the late 1950s tend to be about one step too late, not only compared to Neckel's types, but also with respect to reliable MK classifications from slit-spectra.
