Coordinates and identifications for Haute Provence red stars version: 3 Aug 2002 The lists below contain accurate coordinates and numerous identifications for some 500 red stars observed on objective-prism plates taken at l'Observatoire de Haute Provence, and published in a series of papers by Perraud and by Barbier. The stars that were identified (by BD or other name) in the source papers are referenced in SIMBAD, but the remainder are missing. The original coordinates are not always reliable and many problem cases exist, so this omission is not surprising. The file below shows the stars that were identified only by coordinates plus a few others deemed useful. I worked from the original coordinates and initially searched 5' radii in VizieR looking at Tycho-2, IRAS, and the MSX catalogues for likely matches. The stars had to be fairly bright and have colors consistent with late spectral type. Most were within 2'-3'. When no star was found within 5' radius, candidates were sought at shifts of +/- 1m RA and +/- 10' Dec, which cleared up many cases unambiguously. Some had odd errors, and still others were not recovered. In brief, short of taking new observations I did the best I could to recover the stars. Once the positions were corrected, fairly complete identifications were then sought in the HD, BD, Dearborn (DO) red stars, and GCVS v4.1 catalogues again using VizieR. The MSX designation is given in the notes when there is no IRAS match. The large number of identifications in the Dearborn catalogue show that not very many of these stars were 'new' even at the time the papers were published, in the sense of being previously unknown M-type stars. Peter Pesch complains along these lines in a follow-up paper to Barbier's final list (1976Ap&SS..40..351P). Even so, nearly all the stars yield new useful information for SIMBAD for previously 'anonymous' IRAS sources (not identified as stars), and permit the linkage of numerous multiple entries in the database. The format for each list is identical apart from the occasional omission of magnitudes. All the magnitudes are rather poor, but in the majority of cases something more reliable (Tycho-2, even GSC) is now available. The table entries are rather wider than 80 columns to accomodate all the main items. Barbier's spectral types are often expressed in the form, e.g. M2:3:. I have shown them as 'slash' types (Houk notation) with a colon, e.g. M2/3:. These indicate uncertainty in the type, not a range; they should not be given as fractional types, e.g. M2.5:. The complete biblio citations are shown below. Note that these differ slightly from the current SIMBAD biblio by including the collaborating co-authors and also by showing start/end page numbers.
