Faint M-dwarf Doubles from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Brian A. All the pairs in this installment were found while checking over the list of 44,000 faint M dwarfs classified by Andrew West et al (2008). The spectra were taken as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and include stars observed in Data Release 5. A curious aspect of the list is that a significant fraction of the stars were observed essentially by mistake. The SDSS aimed to acquire spectra (and redshifts) for something like a million galaxies and quasars. Stars were observed {\it inter alia} to allocate otherwise unused fibers in any particular field-plate that fed the multi-object spectrograph. Although a complete variety of stars was inevitably observed, many M-dwarf targets were chosen preferentially by being `nonstellar' and having photometric colors resembling galaxies or quasars with large redshifts. The M-dwarf pairs are commonly flagged in the photometric catalogue as being galaxies, and their red colors indicated high redshift. But the nonstellar aspect resulted from their being near-equal double stars --- not galaxies --- that were not properly resolved by the image-reduction software pipeline. Thus the sample of M dwarfs classified by West et al includes large numbers of these unrecognized binaries. This skews the analysis of the data: among other things, the stars are at nearly twice the distances that were determined, since the individual stars are about 0.75 mag fainter than the authors assumed. Such near-equal M-dwarf binaries are not common in the population of nearby stars within 25pc, so this sample is a biased one. To find the pairs I simply examined sky-survey images, including of course the high-resolution SDSS images, but also available Schmidt plate-scans, and the 2MASS survey. The long temporal baseline of the Schmidt plates and Sloan images allows one to check for optical pairs. As a result, even though many of the pairs have only a single measure, essentially all must be physical. Because of the somewhat irregular images on the various Schmidt plates, sometimes the derived proper motions are incorrect in, for example, USNO-B1.0. Thus few of these pairs are identifiable simply by looking in the catalogues for common-motion stars in close proximity. The images and photometry in various passbands across the visible spectrum permit one to recognize white-dwarf companions by their very blue colors. In the Sloan images, it can be surprising to see the relative brightness of these pairs reverse dramatically between the g-band and the i-band images. The SDSS photometric catalogue {\emph sometimes} shows separate entries for the two stars, but in other cases I measured them approximately using large-scale image cut-outs from the Goddard SkyView utility. These are flagged as `estimate' in the table below. When the stars are resolved in the catalogue I show magnitudes and sometimes spectral types directly for both components, while for the others I used the combined-light brightness and eye-estimates of delta-mag to get the separate magnitudes. For close pairs, I could sometimes used the Carlsberg meridian-circle catalogue (Evans et al 2002), which has much lower angular resolution, to confirm that the SDSS magnitude was for the combined light of the system. When the pairs are several arcseconds apart, it was possible to get additional measures of separation and position-angle from other astrometric sources such as 2MASS and even the catalogues based on scans of the Schmidt sky surveys. Extending the temporal baseline of the measurements is essential in establishing the physical link between the stars since the catalogued proper motions are sometimes incorrect. Sometimes the star observed for spectral type is not the primary; these are distinctive in the list by having the M-type classification in the second of the columns showing the types. I have tried to give an estimate of the type of primary from the photometric colors. The SDSS spectrograph fibers were 3" diameter, and so pairs with separation under 1".5 were probably observed together, if only because the seeing spread the light from both stars into the fiber. The magnitudes are close to standard V, derived from the Sloan g and r magnitudes simply from g+r/2, which for the present purposes is close enough, and are rounded always to 0.1-mag precision. In a few cases there is legitimate V-band photometry published, sufficient to show that this simple expedient is valid. The 300 or so pairs listed here are by no means complete. In the gore of Right Ascension between 8h and 9h I did examine all the stars brighter than Sloan r magnitude 19.0. In other regions groups of stars were checked pretty much at random as my interest was piqued. Thus there remain thousands of such pairs to be extracted from the catalogue. Similar results for over 1300 new common-motion pairs were published from the same dataset by Saurav Dhital et al (2010). These pairs match in both proper motion and radial-velocity determined from the same Sloan spectra. These are referred to as `SLoWPoKES' pairs, which now have the acronym `SLW' in the WDS. Most of these lack mesasurement at multiple epochs, though the proper motions should be reliable at the wide separations involved. The pairs listed here have separations altogether closer, typically 1" - 2", rather than some tens of arcseconds common amongst the SLW pairs. The cabal led by Andrew West has more recently published spectral types for another 70,000 Sloan M dwarfs (West et al 2011). These come from the SDSS DR7 catalogue plus additional unpublished spectroscopic plates. Though there is considerable overlap with the first pass through the data, more close pairs similar to the ones here have been easy to find, and a selection will be forthcoming.
