The list below shows accurate coordinates and identifications for about 550 late-type stars reported by Stephenson from objective-prism plates covering the northern two-thirds of the sky outside the galactic plane. All the stars are present in SIMBAD, but commonly with various errors and very frequently with multiple entries in the database. The list is in fact a rich source of various database problems. I used the SIMBAD equinox 2000 coordinates to recover the stars, but compared with Stephenson's original equinox 1900 positions as a check on the many cases of ambiguity. Several stars are not present near the indicated places, and are shown without coordinates in the list below; gross errors or typos in the positions are implied. The coordinates are mostly from UCAC2, though several other catalogues are used, as specified for each star. The GSC-ACT still provides the 'best' position (or 'as good as any') for several stars. I matched the improved coordinates in VizieR against HD/BD/CD/CPD, Tycho-2, GSC-ACT, IRAS, MSX6C, Dearborn, and GCVS v4.2 to search for useful identifications. Stephenson found nearly all the HD/DM and Dearborn names, though I correct some errors in the remarks. Magnitudes Stephenson's eyeball magnitude estimates are rather poor, and I have replaced them with standard V from ASAS-3 or TASS MkIV, plus a few legit published photoelectric observations. SIMBAD has given the many stars that Stephenson estimated as >13.5 or >>13.5 as simply 13.5 in _either_ the mb or mv column, seemingly indiscriminately (Stephenson specifies his estimates are photo-visual). All should be deleted and replaced with the V magnitudes below. For the many strongly variable stars I sometimes give representative magnitudes to half- or whole-magnitude precision. Thus some magnitudes are shown without a decimal not because of uncertainty but because the star is commonly found in that range of brightness. As is common for stars that are very bright in the near-IR appearing in the IRC catalogue, SIMBAD often shows erroneous magnitudes (something like 8.40 or 8.50) that are several magnitudes too bright, as though they were in fact I-band magnitudes, not V. Those I happened to notice are flagged in the remarks. Spectral types As in other papers in the same series, Stephenson often gives hyphenated types, e.g. M6-7, to indicate the range of uncertainty in the type. These are given incorrectly in SIMBAD as, in this example, M6.5. This implies a precision in the types not present in the originals, and are thus misleading. These uncertain types are given below in Houk-style 'slash' notation, like M6/7 in this example to imply "M6 _or_ M7". One complication Stephenson introduces in the types is that some are shown as, e.g. >=M6 or similar, meaning "M6 or later". I don't know of a good way of giving these in a readily parsable manner, and so show them in the form 'M6+' with a note indicating how the type was given in the source paper. This is necessary because there are also some types given precisely as (say) M6+, meaning the type is slightly later than M6 (or M7-, meaning slightly earlier than M7). The notation scheme as published is not completely consistent. Also, Stephenson sometimes adds the letter 'r' to the types, meaning the spectrum appears reddened. These are moved to the remarks and spelled out since they have caused confusion in the SIMBAD headers. SIMBAD aliases and other problems Something like 80 percent of the stars have two entries in SIMBAD, mainly from being unmatched with the relevant IRAS detections. Some stars have as many as five IDs, and several complicated mix-ups have already been reported to the CDS for correction. ID errors (or mis-attributions) in the original IRC catalogue are the source of many of the latter. I note some of the related SIMBAD entries have the object-type shown as carbon stars; I think, however, that exactly _none_ of them are carbon, but instead were reported merely as carbon-candidates from IRAS data without any proper spectral follow-up. Yes, and M dwarfs, too! Stephenson inadvertently included 18 M dwarfs in this list, which I have examined and reported on separately. Briefly, it seems the spectral types for the dwarfs are too late, and the stars are not as close as inferred from the types alone, though still relatively nearby.
