Hipparcos Results for Solar Analogs

Abstract
The combination of precise distances, detailed spectroscopic analyses, and internal structure calculations yields an evolutionary mass, a chemical composition, and state of evolution, hence age, of an observed sample of 52 photometric solar analogs of unprecedented accuracy.

1. Introduction

In this contribution we will approach the new results for stars like the Sun in three stages. First, we will review the reasons for the wide astronomical interest in studying stars resembling the Sun. Second, we will summarize the results of our spectroscopic search for solar analogs before the availability of parallaxes from the astrometric satellite Hipparcos. Finally, we will introduce the recent results from Hipparcos and show how they have affected our understanding of the relative ranking of solar analogs.
